Surgery Day

The day started early.

Up at 6:30 to leave the house by 8. We are to be at nuclear medicine by 9am for a shot of something radioactive. The procedure only took 5 minutes and the surgery was scheduled for 2:10 so we had a few hours to wait. The doctor had told us that he liked to give the medicine a few hours to do its work. It’s designed to identify lymph nodes. Some of our dear friends and family came and say with us during the day.

Around noon we checked in and began the process of filing out more forms and answering more questions. Jane finally got off to surgery at 2 and I went out to wait with everyone else.

At 5 the doctor came out to say that everything went well. We will have a meeting with him in about a week for a post-op check and to go over the pathology report.

As part of the procedure, they inject a blue dye to help identify the lymph nodes. It was so blue that at the surgery site, Jane’s skin was left smurf blue. As we waited for the anesthesia to wear off in recovery, the nurse told us to not be surprised if fluids look a little blue for a few days.

As we got dressed and were preparing to head home, Jane was hit by a wave of nausea. She threw up about 3 times. It was about 7pm. The nurse consulted with the doctor and they decided it was best to not send her home in this condition but instead they should keep her at the hospital overnight for observation. So that is where she is. Resting well.

We will see what tomorrow brings.
