Wild-Horses

A co-worker was recently showing me some pictures that his mom took of wild horses in Arizona. Since I had a trip to Arizona planned I asked if she would be willing to take me out to see them. She was kind and gracious and led Jane and I out to a semi-remote area where a herd of about 400 wild horses live. Thank you Patty!

One think became quickly apparent. You need to understand what you are trying to capture. Horse behavior is a mystery to me which made it impossible to anticipate them. They kept positioning themselves behind bushes and turning away from me.

While walking along with a group of a dozen or so, we would hear them call out to other groups. I don’t know if they were saying “stay away!” or “come over here!”.

After following a group over the hills for a while, we went to where they get into the Salt River.

I have never seen horses stick their heads completely under the water before.

They eat the eel grass they find there.

It was a terrific outing and something I have never experienced before.

  1. Incredible experience! Sticking their head under water like that makes it look like they’re fishing.
